Crown Lengthening Simplified: How Medit Apps Revolutionize Dental Surgery

Designing a Gum(crown) Lengthening Guide with Medit Apps

Crown lengthening treatment is intricate procedure that require precise planning and execution. With advancements in dental technology, creating a surgical guide for such procedures has become more accessible and accurate. In this blog, we’ll dive into the process of designing a crown lengthening guide using Medit apps, transforming the way dental professionals approach crown lengthening procedure.

Step-by-Step Guide to Designing Your Surgical Guide

1. Preparing the Study Model:

Start by attaching a study model STL file to your case. This digital model is the foundation of your design process, providing the detailed anatomy needed to create your guide.

2. Editing and Duplicating Components:

Within the Design app, enter Edit Mode to duplicate the maxilla base. Also, duplicate the target teeth from the study model, ensuring to include the cervical gingival area. This step is crucial for matching the actual gum line and teeth alignment.

3. Transformation and Scaling:

Switch to Transformation Mode to scale and position the duplicated teeth onto the maxilla base. Your goal here is to match the facial curvature closely, ensuring the guide will fit perfectly during surgery.

4. Refining the Design:

Return to Edit Mode to refine your design. This involves removing a portion of the cervical area from the maxilla base teeth and eliminating overlapping areas for a seamless connection. Utilize the Combine feature to merge the components, then employ the Bridge tool and Fill Holes function to create a cohesive model.

5. Finalizing the Design:

Upon completion, save your work by overwriting the data, locking in your design adjustments.

6. Creating the Splint:

Load your combined mesh into the Splints app, opting for the Anterior Bite and Manual Creation settings. Carefully set the insertion path and adjust the margin to define the gum line precisely. For the outer surface, enable the Dual layer splint feature for added functionality.

7. Completing Your Crown Lengthening Guide:

With all settings adjusted, click Complete to finalize your design. The result is a 3D printable inner layer of the splint, ready to be used as a crown lengthening guide.
